Ministers refused to back down last night in the face of a defeat in the House of Lords which threatens to block their bill to introduce ID cards until the scheme’s estimated costs have been independently vetted by the National Audit Office…

This was sadly inevitable and only goes to highlight the difficulty in find an intersection between three “dimensions” of the problem:

  • What is technologically feasible
  • What is socially and politically desirable
  • What is publicly acceptable

Unfortunately, few seem to have been able to crack all three, and most electronic ID solutions are based on a compromise between any one pair of the three dimensions.
