Tariffs: Roaming Around Europe

An interesting set of comparisons about the rip-off roaming charges made by mobile phone operators in Europe, but the European Commission stops short of making any value judgements, for example over allegations of cartel-like agreements between operators in different countries or of making calls and messaging more difficult to non-cartel partner networks, something admitted to me by a garrulous and gullible help desk operator in France a couple fo years back.

When you can pay less than 5 Eurocents for a text message nationally, can there be any justification for charging upwards of 10 times that just because the data packets happen to cross political borders but within the same standards network.

The networks have been milking this cash-cow for years: maybe it’s time for the cows to come home…
