Who needs data standards in local government? (IDABC conference second day)

Alasdair Mangham from the London Borough of Camden brought home the need for standards in local government: despite more and more local administrations providing “live event management” type services on the Web, they noted that there was no common list of service descriptions, common terminology or agreed semantics. How can you possibly imagine providing services to citizens – particularly those moving from country to country within one country, let alone across the EU – with more than 100,000 local authorities using their own terminology?
