A blessing and a curse

In his summing up of the first day of the IDABC Conference, acting Head of Unit in the European Commission service responsible for the programme, Bernhard Schnittger, has put his finger on a key problem in European level work regarding eGovernment: “there are a lot of projects – but this is both a blessing and a curse”. A blessing, because it demonstrates the scale of activity that there is at both national, sub-national and European level; but a curse because there is much duplication of effort and lack of coordination and alignment on areas where common policies may be needed. he stressed that there would be a need for a number of pilot projects in the coming period that attempted to drive convergence between initiatives and help move the overall IDABC programme forward.
